Welcome to Lighthouses of South Africa pages brought to you by “The Lighthouse Company.” Thank you for your visit to our site.

Did you know that Pharology, pronounced “fa rol ogy” is the name given to the study of lighthouses?

To those who have been here before I am sure you will find some more interesting information. Please feel free to send any lighthouse info so that South Africa can have an interesting site. After all it is one of South Africa’s finest Heritages! An unexplored one at that!!

South Africa has 43 lighthouses, however we will only be covering the ones of historic and architectural value to begin with.

Our site started some 3 years ago and we have had almost 18000 hits to date. We are ranked 68th on the “Top 25 lighthouse Sites” Don’t forget to vote for our site and visit other sites of lighthouses around the world. You will find once you start you’re hooked

Since its inception, many things have happened. Lighthouse Services have recently launched their lighthouses as a tourist destination. This falls under South African Lighthouse Adventure Tour Operation (SALATO). Eight lighthouses are now open to the public, where there is small entrance fee and tours are conducted by the light keepers.

For those who want to spend a weekend away or tour all the lighthouses you can now book 3 star self-catering accommodation at selected lighthouses outlined in this site. Backpackers are also catered for at some locations and camping is being developed.

For customized tours drop us a line and we will gladly package a tour for you.

We have tried to cover as many lighthouses as possible and will always be adding to this site as and when we acquire information. The next step we hope will be Shipwrecks.

The site covers the three provinces along our coast starting at Cape Columbine in the Western Cape on the West coast in a little fishing village called Paternoster and ending in Cape Vidal which is the second last lighthouse before the Mozambique Border in Kwa Zulu Natal with the Eastern Cape in between.

One of the purposes of this site is to involve people who have interesting stories, information and pictures of South African Lighthouses. Post your info on our forum and let the world know what South Africa has to offer, not to mention the interesting people that helped built this unfound heritage.

We have also introduced more lighthouse products to the shop so do pop in. Give a little Gift of Light to some one special and lets switch on the lights in South Africa!!

In view of the symbolism between lighthouses and souls who arrive here with genetic disorders, The Lighthouse Company pledges a percentage of its profit towards Down Syndrome South Africa. This project has been recommended and supported by Down Syndrome South Africa and the South African Federal Council on Disability. So, Give a little light, today!

Happy lighthousing !!
